Outings
Troop 985 goes on an outdoor outing approximately every
month.  These include weekend camping trips, canoeing,
backpacking, cycling and organized activities such as
spending the night on the aircraft carrier Yorktown.  The
Troop goes to summer camp every year and for the past few
years has gone on a "High Adventure" trip every other year.
In 2005, 2007, and 2009 our older Scouts went to Philmont
Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

Troop 985 follows the numerous and stringent safety rules
of Scouting. A few examples that may be of interest to
parents new to Scouting are:
  • Two deep leadership at all times.
  • All boating and swimming activities are conducted in
accordance with Safety Afloat and Safe Swim
Defense.  These include use of the buddy system,
frequent buddy checks, annual swim tests and careful
screening of swim areas for dangerous objects in the
    water.
  • Knives, axes and saws may not be used until the
Scout has been trained and qualified in the safe use
of these tools, which may be used only in a properly
    prepared wood yard.
  • Fire safety rules are observed to protect against
burns and forest fires.  No flames are allowed in or
near tents.  Liquid fuels are discouraged.
